Ferry Tales

Ferry Tales is a collection of stories -- historical and contemporary -- of all the strange and wonderful things that happen on ferry boats. Listen to stories of the boats, the people who sail on them and the people who run them.

For years, Jill Johnson of Clinton has practiced her art as a master storyteller all over northwest Washington, California and Oregon. She is known especially for her stories of Berte Olson, Washington's first female ferryboat skipper. In the years before Deception Pass Bridge was built in 1935, Olson and her husband operated a small ferry between Whidbey and Fidalgo islands, fighting all proposals that came before the state legislature to build a bridge!
